The Murat Theatre is hugely symbolic building in Indianapolis, as it was built in 1909 by the Massons as the Murat Shrine Temple. It is significant from a historical perspective as its designs and details are influenced greatly by the ancient Egyptians and Arabs. It was the first venue to show a color film (in 1911)and in the 1920's the Egyptian Room was constructed, an astounding creation that featured hieroglyphs and golf fittings, creating an entertainment venue that for the time was truly out of this world. Threatened by abandonment in the fifties, renovations and repairs were made and it is still as awe-inspiring now as it was when it opened a century ago.
