struggle and survival
Survival and friendship that blooms against the odds are the key themes in this stage adaptation of the beloved 1969 children's book. When 11-year-old William tries to escape the fighting and the fear of World War II aboard the SS Hato, his world is further turned upside down when the boat is torpedoed, leaving him blind and stranded in the company of Timothy, a resourceful old black man. Over time the duo form an unlikely bond, leaving an impression that will last a lifetime.
Based on true story, at first William and Timothy come find companionship difficult, owing to Williams impediment and his racial prejudice, but Timothy's patience and knowledge of survival skills find them bound together in hardship, as William learns to become self sufficient on their tiny Caribbean island. Heart wrenching and poignant, The Cay teaches us to believe in ourselves and open up the boundaries of friendship and trust, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
